The Hon. Minister participated at a luncheon hosted by H E Mr. Somasundaram Skandakumar, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Australia for political leaders, senior government officials of Victoria and corporate sector representatives on 04 April 2016 in Melbourne. The Hon. Minister was welcomed by Hon. Steve Herbert, Minister for Training, Skills and International Education of Victorian State Government. Addressing the guests during the luncheon the Hon. Minister Samaraweera elaborated on the recent political developments of Sri Lanka and conducive environment being created for trade and investment.
Among the prominent political leaders Hon. Bruce Atkinson, MLC and the President of the Legislative Council, Hon. Telmo Languiller, MP and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Hon. Steve Herbert, Minster for Training, Skills and International Education, Hon. Daniel Mullino, MP, Hon. Marsha Thomson, MP, Hon. Jude Perera, MP and Hon. CriagOndarchie, MP were present. Prof. David de Kretser, former Governor of Victoria was also in attendance. Mr. Andrew Collins, Assistant Secretary, South Asia Regional & Indian Ocean Branch of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) represented the government of Australia.
Corporate representatives of Outotec, First Graphite, Lusona Capital, Taylors, Monash College, Swinburne University, William Angliss College, Iluka Resources and several other business establishments attended the event.
The Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs also participated at a Round table Discussion at the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA), Victoria. Mr. Patrick Moore, President of the AIIA welcomed the Hon. Minister and chaired the discussion. The Hon. Minister spoke on the political developments of Sri Lanka following the Presidential election of 08 January 2015 and wide ranging political and economic related issues impacting on the Asia – Pacific region. During the extremely constructive interactive session the Hon. Minister answered many questions raised by the audience which comprised members of the AIIA, Victorian political leaders, senior Australian government officials including Ms. Jenny Bloomfield, State Director for Victoria of the DFAT and policy makers, university students and cross section of Sri Lankan expatriate community.
