Sinhala Association of QLD celebrated the Sinhala and Hindu New year festival on the 17 April 2016 with all ritual and traditions being observed as in the past in the scenic grounds of Mt Crosby Brisbane Queensland. The festival was attended by over four hundred Sri Lankan’s from the community and it was a great family day enjoyed by all with traditional New Year eats and "Avurudu Kreedha". It was the Silver jubilee celebrations of the association being with the community over twenty five years and celebrating our cultural event gracefully, especially focused to our children and youth to give them a taste of traditions observed during the New Year time.
SAQ had all its representations such as the seniors group, Brisbane Sinhala School and our youth sector with their stalls decorated with different activities performed during the year. One of the ritualist activities "Hisa Thel Gamma" was carried out by the elders and the Jana Gee, Jana Natum, Jana Kreedha added the theme of a great festive. It need to be mentioned the active participation of the of all age groups in Avurudu Kreedha making Bak Maha Ulela to make the day joyful with memories of great tradition. The Festival started with lighting of traditional Oil Lamp, boiling of Milk Pot and playing traditional raban. Serving among gathering traditional milk rice, sweets and many other traditional Sri Lankan foods followed by nice lunch all the guests enjoyed.
The event was supported by sponsoring groups who were greatly associated with the festival and the events.
The traditional celebrations were graced by the presence of Mr. Anton Swan Honorary Consul Sri Lanka in Brisbane, Australia and Ms. Kerrin Benson CEO Multicultural Development Association as special guests.
