As aid groups brace for a dengue fever outbreak among flood survivors in Sri Lanka, Australia will chip in $500,000 for emergency assistance.

Torrential rain has sparked widespread flooding and triggered landslides in south-western parts of the Indian Ocean island nation, killing at least 177 people and displacing 70,000.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Australia's assistance will go towards inflatable rescue boats, delivery of clean water and health services.
