Sri Lanka awards dual citizenships to 150 recipients

One hundred and fifty (150) citizens of Sri Lanka received their dual citizenship certificates on Wednesday, June 11. 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that so far 450 persons who had filed applications for dual citizenship, and paid fees before the facility was temporarily halted last year, have been granted dual citizenship. 

The presentation of dual citizenship certificates to 150 Sri Lankan citizens was at held the auditorium of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Public Order John Amaratunga and the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration M.N. Ranasinghe were present at the occasion.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mangala Samaraweera stated that the government of President Sirisena welcomes all of them as citizens of this country who now carry the flag of Sri Lanka overseas.

He went on to note that there are many things that can be learnt regarding the aspects of Sri Lankan civic, economic and cultural life. Minister of Public Order, John Amaratunga stated that a total of 34,000 citizenship certificates have been given over the years since they began but during the previous regime in 2011, the issue of dual citizenships were suspended.

He stated that however  2000 were given through the backdoor. He added that they are trying to investigate whether the the proper procedures were followed in that process of giving out the 2000.

He went on to note that after President Sirisena took over the office appointing the PM, they were told to start opening the doors of Sri Lanka to those who left their shores due to various reasons.
