Victorians can apply for $200 vouchers to holiday at home this summer on a first-come, first-served basis from Friday.

The state government will open registration for 40,000 regional travel vouchers on Friday at 10am.

The first round of vouchers will only apply to travel in regional Victoria between December 12 and January 22, and the discount can only be redeemed after the travel has been taken.

The scheme requires tourists to stay at least two nights in paid accommodation and is open to Victorian residents who are 18 or older. Vouchers can only be redeemed once.

Tourism Minister Martin Pakula said that by having tourists pay for the travel up front, support would go “directly to tourism businesses to increase their cash flow”.

“If they’ve already booked travel, they can apply for a voucher, provided the travel is in that time. But we’re not handing out $200 up front, there needs to be some appropriate rigour in this,” he said.

“I would expect demand to potentially outstrip supply, that’s been the experience in other parts of the country.

“We’ve tried to be generous, but 40,000 is the limit for the first tranche and for each tranche after that, and if people miss out on the first round, they’ll obviously be eligible to apply for the second and third tranche.”

The news comes as Victoria recorded another day of zero cases of coronavirus – either locally acquired or from overseas arrivals – and zero deaths.
