The Second Coffee International (SCI) is the brainchild of Seetha Herath residing in Melbourne, Australia. The idea of sacrificing something in her day-to-day life and using that to help the poor and hungry in Sri Lanka. The idea was born when she was having a cup of coffee at a restaurant, she decided to sacrifice her second cup of coffee to launch her project. This was in late 2019.

She began helping the hungry in Sri Lanka in her own quiet way with the help of her immediate relatives living in Sri Lanka. When Seetha introduced her idea and now active mini project to her friends living abroad, quite a few of them willingly joined her and formed a small organization.

Emulating their donor parents, a group of children domiciled in New Zealand and came up with the idea of saving the money that they would have spent on a Second Shake and donated the amounts to make another child smile. They had found a way to connect with back home.

After overcoming many obstacles and teething problems, today, The Second Coffee International has grown into a cohesive organization. We now have members from Australia, Canada,New Zealand, UK, USA, Norway, UAE and of course, Sri Lanka and the numbers are growing slowly but steadily. Our organization has gained non-profit status last year. The Second Coffee International strives to be very transparent on its fundraising activities and how it distributes its donations.

The Second Coffee International has its own Board of Directors and a working committee.

National Development Bank is where we carry out all our transactions and we are now in the process of setting up an online payments gateway to facilitate online donations. Whilst this is in its early stages, we are confident that the ‘online donation process’ will be a reality soon. Share a meal with a family that you have never met before

Method of Operation
Finances for the project is totally dependent on donors and we attract them through word-of mouth. Most of these donors have decided to take the next step of volunteering their valuable time to the SCI after witnessing our efforts and the manner in which we’ve have undertaken the distributions.

It was originally decided to donate dry food parcels worth SLR1500/- to twenty-five poor and hungry families per month. Although the food prices went northwards that did not stop us from continuing our projects and improving on the numbers. Today we are proud to say that we are distributing dry food packages worth SLR3600/- to forty families per month for the last three years. We acknowledge that it will be difficult to obtain on-going donations but we remain convinced that the good deeds we are undertaking will spur on further donations.

Our distribution team is based in Colombo and its neighboring suburbs and all members are very dedicated to the cause. They have distributed over 2000 dry food packages in 16 districts in Sri Lanka. The recipients are selected with the assistance of the Grama Niladharis and monks of village temples but supervised and approved by the distribution team.
