Media Release (26/05/2021): My thoughts are with members of the Sri Lankan-Australian community whose loved ones are affected by the COVID-19 crisis in Sri Lanka. In light of these challenges, I thank you for the support you provide your community. I want to ensure that your community remains informed about the Australian Government’s support to the people of Sri Lanka.
As announced recently by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, the Government will provide $17.5 million in funding for emergency relief with support to be delivered by trusted on-the-ground partners in Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The Government will respond directly to the identified needs of our partners through the procurement of critical supplies, including oxygen and ventilators. Australia will also support frontline health workers and help improve contact tracing.
Specifically in Sri Lanka, Australia will be providing an additional $5.5 million to the UN SDG Fund for critical supplies and health system support for the Ministry of Health. This builds on the $6.2 million provided in 2020-21 and the delivery of oxygen and related supplies through UNICEF earlier last week.
As the Minister for Foreign Affairs announced, Australia is committed to supporting countries in the North East Indian Ocean region as they face a surge in cases, with our contributions going directly to those organisations who are delivering much-needed assistance to the people who need it most. You can find the full announcement here.
I encourage you to contact me through the Department of Home Affairs’ Regional Directors and Community Liaison Officer network should you have further questions.
Thank you for your ongoing support and for your efforts to support your community during this difficult period.
THE HON ALEX HAWKE MP
MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION, CITIZENSHIP, MIGRANT SERVICES AND MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS
