Sri Lanka imports around 85% of its medical supplies. But with foreign currency reserves running low, doctors across the country say hospitals are running out of medicines and essential supplies as the country’s economic crisis worsens. Hospitals, clinics and pharmacies are struggling to procure lifesaving drugs and medical equipment. They fear a health catastrophe if international help doesn’t arrive soon.
Already many kindhearted Sri Lankans living overseas have started extending their generous support to the local public hospital system, however much more funds are required to meet the massive demands.
Who are we?
AUSLMAT (Australia Sri Lanka Medical Aid Team) in partnership with the global fundraising network #MedicalHelpSL has been raising funds, procuring essential medicines and medical items and sending them to hospitals in need. Established in 2004 as a registered medical charity organisation AUSLMAT has continued to assist Sri Lanka during difficult situations including the Boxing Day Tsunami and the COVID-19 pandemic.
How will AUSLMAT “Heal Our Nation”?
- partnering with similar fundraising organisations in other countries including the USA, and the UK to maximise the benefit from the money you donate. This approach will prevent duplication of purchases and reduce intermediate costs such as taxes.
- ensuring to have the latest updates on medical shortages through regular discussions with the Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka.
- coordinating the distribution of medicine with relevant colleges (eg: Sri Lanka Medical Association/Ceylon College of Physicians/College of Paediatrics/Perinatal Society) to ensure your donation goes to the hospitals in need.
- purchasing items directly from overseas manufacturers/wholesalers and air freighting to SL free of charge with courtesy of SL Airways.
